In 2019, China’s coldwater shrimp Imports Increased, Keeping Its Position as the World’s Lagest
Datetime:2020-03-12The year 2019 has seen rapid growth in China’s imports of coldwater shrimp. According to the latest statistics by China Customs, China imported 53,461 tons of frozen coldwater shrimp in 2019, an increase of 17.4% over the 45,547 tons in 2018, reaching a record high and keeping its position as the world’s largest importer of coldwater shrimp.

In 2019, Canada exported 27,154 tons of coldwater shrimp to China, accounting for 50.8% of China’s total imports, ranking the first; Greenland exported 15,379 tons to China, accounting for 28.8% of the total, ranking the second; Russia, Denmark, and Estonia exported 3,739 tons, 2,930 tons and 2,604 tons to China, ranking the third, fourth and fifth respectively.

In terms of the distribution of imports throughout the year, those in January, November and December 2019 were significantly higher than those in other months, indicating thatcoldwater shrimp consumption in China during the winter and Spring Festival was higher than that in other seasons.

In terms of the destinations of coldwater shrimp imports, Shandong and Liaoning ranked the first and second, accounting for 55.4% and 23.1% of the total, registering a combined 78.5%. Qingdao, Shandong and Dalian, Liaoning are the most important ports for coldwater shrimp imports, as well as concentration areas for coldwater shrimp importers, wholesalers and processing plants.

In addition,coldwater shrimp imports by other regions of China were also increasing rapidly. The combined imports by Guangdong, Shanghai, Fujian, Jiangsu, Beijing and Anhui exceeded 1% of the total, indicating that coldwater shrimp consumption in these regions was growing fast. The consumption was rapidly spreading from north China, northeast China, and northwest China to coastal areas and even the whole country. In 2018 and 2019, Canadian Association of Prawn Producers enhanced its promotion in coldwater shrimp supermarkets in east China, south China, southwest China and central China. These offline promotions greatly increased the sales of coldwater shrimps in these regions. Now, people can buy Canadian coldwater shrimps and related products in various retail packages from supermarket chains in all provinces (except Tibet) in China, which provides a huge convenience for consumers.
Meanwhile, we are glad to find that the average price of coldwater shrimp imports in many emerging destinations is significantly higher than the traditional ones. For example, that in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Beijing, Jilin, Zhejiang is much higher than that in Shandong and Liaoning, showing the strong purchasing power of consumers in these regions as well as their high demands for large, high-quality coldwater shrimps.
