Norwegian salmon situation for the first half of the year

Norway exported 524,000 tonnes of salmon worth NOK 58.5 billion (USD 5.47 B) in the first half of the year.
Export value increased by NOK 10.3 billion (USD 960 M), or 21 per cent, compared to the first half of last year.
Export volume fell by 2 per cent.
Poland, the USA, and France were the biggest markets for salmon in the first half of the year.
This is a record high export value for salmon in the first half of the year. The value is NOK 10.3 billion (USD 960 M) higher than the previous record, which was in the first half of 2022.
Increased demand in the US
“There has been a record-breaking salmon market in the first half of the year. In addition to the currency effect, price growth is the driver of value growth. We are particularly seeing increased demand for Norwegian salmon in the US. The flow of goods is also characterized by the reopening of Chinese society after the corona pandemic. This has led to increased sales of salmon in this market”,
says Paul T. Aandahl, Seafood Analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council.
The USA had the greatest growth in value in the first half of the year, with an increase in export value of almost NOK 1.7 billion (USD 160 M), or 45 per cent, compared to the first half of last year.
The export volume to the USA ended at 34,400 tonnes, which is 17 per cent higher than in the first half of last year.
High prices
Fresh whole salmon reached record prices at NOK 107 (USD 10) per kg. This is NOK 20 (USD 1.87) higher than the previous record for a first half of a year, which was in the first half of 2022.
Record high prices were also achieved for fresh salmon fillets at NOK 153 (USD 14.3) per kg. This is NOK 35 (USD 3.27) higher than the previous record for a first half of a year, which was in the first half of 2022.
June exports of salmon in summary
Norway exported 98,697 tonnes of salmon to a value of NOK 10.9 billion (USD 1.02 M) in June
The value of exports increased by NOK 2.2 billion (USD 210 M) , or 26 per cent, compared to June last year.
Export volume grew by 14 per cent.

A good six months for trout
Norway exported 20,900 tonnes of trout worth NOK 2.3 billion (USD 210 M) in the first half of the year.
Export value increased by NOK 177 million (USD 16.54 M), or 8 per cent, compared to the first half of last year.
Export volume fell by 12 per cent.
The USA, Thailand and Lithuania were the biggest markets for trout in the first half of the year.
This is a record high export value for trout in the first half of the year. Some NOK 177 million (USD 16.54 M) higher than the previous record, which was set in the first half of 2022.
Lithuania sees the greatest increase in export value
Lithuania had the largest increase in export value in the first half of the year, with an increase in export value of NOK 170 million (USD 15.89 M), or 400 per cent, compared to the first half of last year.
The export volume to Lithuania ended at 2,100 tonnes, which is 357 per cent higher than in the first half of last year.

“This is mostly related to changed product flows for trout because of the war in Ukraine. Before the war, Belarus was one of the most important markets for trout from Norway. Now this market has completely disappeared”, says Paul T. Aandahl, Seafood Analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council.
High prices
Fresh whole trout reached a high of NOK 107 (USD 10) per kg. This is NOK 17 (1.59) higher than the previous record for a first half of a year, which was in the first half of 2022.
Fresh trout fillets peaked at NOK 148 (USD 13.83) per kg. This is NOK 41 (USD 3.83) higher than the previous record for a first half of a year, which was in the first half of 2017.
June exports of trout in summary
Norway exported 5,071 tonnes of trout worth NOK 530 million (USD 49.54 M) in June
Export ´value increased by NOK 57 million (USD 5.33 M), or 12 per cent, compared to June last year.
Export volume grew by 9 per cent.
The USA, Japan and Lithuania were the biggest markets for trout in June.
