In 2025, seafood will replace pork as the main source of protein for Chinese people

Datetime:2022-03-09

China plans to increase seafood production to 69 million tonnes by 2025 in its 15th Five-Year Plan, which is currently under development.

In the 15th five-year plan, China's seafood production, including farmed and wild seafood, will reach 69 million tons by 2025. China's total seafood production will increase from 64.5 million tons in 2017 to 65.4 million tons in 2020, 65.7 million tons in 2021, and 66.1 million tons in 2022.

During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the production level of seafood will be higher than the 55 million tons of pork production level proposed in the document. Pork is considered to be the main protein in the Chinese diet, and it is symbolic that it will be replaced by seafood in the future.

A document issued by China's State Council on February 11, 2022 called for greater investment in remote fishing bases. Long-distance fishery bases refer to fishing ports and processing centers built by Chinese fishery companies in West Africa, Latin America and Oceania.

At the same time, it calls for stricter environmental measures for household aquaculture, strengthens the strict planning of "tidal protection system", refers to the large number of aquaculture facilities in China's coastal areas, and proposes the development of "rice and fish integrated aquaculture", "large-scale ecological fishery" and "saline-alkali" Breeding", and promised to "optimize the offshore green aquaculture program"
